National free-bed and blood availability portal for the Ministry of Health
A public portal where anyone can see which hospitals have free beds available and which blood banks hold which blood components, sourced from the facilities themselves and filterable by province, district and facility.
The challenge
Nepal's free-bed policy obliges hospitals to reserve a share of beds for free treatment, and blood banks hold stock that a patient's family may need to find in the middle of the night. Neither was visible anywhere: the numbers lived inside each facility, and a citizen or a referring doctor had to phone around.
What we did
The portal has a public face and a facility face. Publicly, a bed dashboard shows total beds, free beds available and free beds in use for every listed hospital, broken down by department, with province, district and organisation filters in Nepali and English. A Blood Information Portal shows blood component availability across the country by blood group and component, with each facility's location and phone number one tap away, and citizens can submit a complaint through a captcha-protected form.
Facilities log in with their health-facility code, or through DHIS2, to maintain their own bed and patient figures, and an API-key mechanism lets a hospital's EMR push patient events automatically instead of someone typing them. Ministry administrators manage organisations, hospital admins, notices, downloads and reports.
The outcome
Bed and blood availability are public, current and searchable, sourced from the facilities that hold them. The DHIS2 login and the EMR key route mean the data can be kept up without a new reporting burden on hospital staff.
